PFSense - Install pfSense - Initial Configuration

Login to pfSense GUI

Open a browser and enter http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar.

You should be presented with a login screen as shown below.

If this doesn’t work, validate the IP address space your PC is using is in the same subnet as pfSense’s local interface.

Default username and password to pfSense are:

Username: admin 
Password: pfsense

NOTE: After you log in you will notice at the top of the screen a warning advising that the admin password is currently set to the default value.

It’s fine to ignore this for now as you will be prompted to change it during the initial configuration.


Wizard Setup

The configuration wizard will guide you through the initial configuration steps.

Click Next to begin.


Netgate Global Support subscription

There is an offer to purchase a Netgate Global Support subscription.

Click Next to begin.


General Information

  • Hostname: pfSense.
  • Domain: local.lan.
  • Primary DNS server: 208.67.222.222.
  • Secondary DNS server: 208.67.220.220.
  • Override DNS: Not Checked.
  • Click Next.

NOTE: OpenDNS servers are used here for initial DNS resolution.

Alternative DNS providers can be used instead.

It is easy to change this later.


Configure NTP

  • Time server hostname: 0.pfsense.pool.ntp.org.
  • Timezone: Europe/Jersey.
  • Click Next.

NOTE: Set the Timezone to your own specific location.


Configure WAN Interface

Configure WAN Interface:

  • Selected Type: PPPoE.

General Configuration:

  • MAC Address: <blank>.
  • MTU: <blank>.
  • MSS: <blank>.

Static IP Configuration:

  • IP Address: <blank>.
  • Subnet Mask: 32. Default.
  • Upstream Gateway: <blank>.

DHCP client configuration:

  • DHCP hostname: <blank>.

PPPoE Configuration:

  • PPoE username: Username.
  • PPPoE Password: Password.
  • Show PPPoE password: Not Checked.
  • PPPoE Service name: <blank>.
  • PPPoE Dial on demand: Not Checked.
  • PPPoE Idle timeout: <blank>.

PPTP configuration

  • PPTP username: <blank>.
  • PPTP password: <blank>.
  • Show PPTP password: Not Checked.
  • PPTP local IP address: <blank>.
  • PPTP local subnet: 32. Default.
  • PPTP remote IP address: <blank>.
  • PPTP dial on demand: Not Checked.
  • PPTP idle timeout: <blank>.

RFC1918 networks:

  • Block RFC1918 Private networks: Checked.

Block BOGON networks:

  • Block bogon networks: Checked.

Click Next to continue.


Configure LAN Interface

You can give your LAN interface a specific address here if needed.

Leave it as 192.168.1.1 for now.

  • LAN IP address: 192.168.1.1.
  • Subnet mask: 24.
  • Click Next to continue.


Set Admin WebGUI Password

Choose a strong password.

  • Admin Password: Password.
  • Admin password again: Password.
  • Click Next to continue.


Reload Configuration

Click Reload to reload the web configurator.


Wizard Completed

Click Finish.

This will display the Main pfSense webConfigurator dashboard where you can configure the rest of the system from.

Return to Install pfSense or continue to Initial Configuration.
